  • Overview

    The Barn Facilitator is an integral part of Pathways In Education.  This position is responsible for the care and maintenance of all animals at Blackbird Farm and student programming for the Barn at Blackbird Farm.

    Responsibilities

    • Facilitate and support in Barn related social-emotional, experiential, and outdoor education workshops and activities with at-risk high school students.  Develop, oversee, & implement student programming with a focus on animal behavior, animal husbandry, homesteading activities, and agricultural careers. Coordinate with Program Facilitator on all daily scheduling and programming concerning the Barn.
    • Part of the Blackbird Farm leadership team and manages the Barn department and employees within department.  Supervise, train, and schedule the Barn team, including Wranglers and Interns as assigned to department. Coordinate with other leaders, attend and participate in leadership and all staff meetings, department check-ins, etc.  Order and maintain supplies (including fencing, electric chargers, tack, feed, etc) related to specific job responsibilities. Manage department budget.
    • Animal husbandry including but not limited to feeding, watering, health maintenance, breeding, vetting and scheduling outside vendors as needed (farrier, veterinarian, A.I. Tech), cleaning of stalls and pens, etc.  Equine exercising, training, riding, trail development and maintenance, etc. Coordinate trail rides with staff and guest rides with Hospitality Coordinator. Support the Farm to Table ideals of Blackbird Farm through raising of livestock for meat and dairy production.

    Qualifications

    • Must be able to lift 60+lbs
    • Knowledge of horses and other livestock
    • Basic animal first aid and veterinary skills
    • Be able to work independently and also in groups
    • Be comfortable with public speaking

    EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must be at least 21 years of age
    • Employee must pass TB test and Livescan background clearance
    • Bachelor’s degree or 4 years of equivalent experience in an agricultural industry (post high school) preferred
    • 1 to 2 years experience working with At-Risk Youth, at youth camps, with horses/livestock, and/or teaching preferred
    • Valid driver license for at least the past 3 years with a clean driving record preferred
